How to Evaluate Broken Electronics Before You Buy

What a for-parts unit should actually cost, by category, and the two words in a listing that decide whether it is worth bidding.

A listing that says "for parts" can mean the seller dropped it and never plugged it in again, or it can mean a bare circuit board with the main chip desoldered off it. Same two words. Wildly different purchase.

So the useful question isn't whether broken hardware is cheap. It's how cheap it should be for the category you're looking at, and whether the discount is big enough to cover the odds the thing is unfixable.

What a broken unit actually costs

I pulled every tracked product where we have both a confirmed working used listing and a confirmed for-parts listing, then threw out the pairs where the parts listing was a bare PCB rather than a whole unit. That leaves 271 pairs. Here's what a for-parts unit costs as a share of a working one:

  • Motherboards, 73 pairs: 49%
  • Graphics cards, 89 pairs: 50%
  • Game systems, only 6 pairs so treat it loosely: 55%
  • Processors, 28 pairs: 76%
  • Mice, 14 pairs: 86%
  • Headphones, 20 pairs: 89%
  • Game accessories, 41 pairs: 116%

Two clean groups. Boards and graphics cards sell broken for about half of working. Everything small sells broken for nearly what a working one costs, and game accessories somehow sell for more.

That last line is not a typo, and it's the most useful number here.

Why the accessory market is upside down

A working Xbox controller has thousands of competing listings and a price anyone can look up in ten seconds. A broken one, especially a limited edition or a discontinued color, has almost none. Sellers price the scarcity instead of the condition, and buyers who want that exact shell for a repair pay it.

You're not buying a discount there. You're buying a rarer item that happens to be broken.

CPUs are the worst broken buy on this list

76% of working price, for a part with almost no repairable failure modes. A processor that won't POST usually has bent pins in the socket contacts or a dead memory controller, and neither is something you fix at a desk. There's nothing to harvest either. A graphics card has fans, a backplate, a cooler and VRAM worth salvaging. A CPU is one sealed block that works or doesn't.

Ryzen 9 9950X

The AMD Ryzen 9 9950X was released in 2024. It currently tracks at $449 used, 18% below buying new at $549. Broken/parts units track around $195, leaving roughly $254 of gross spread for a repair flip.

The 9950X is the clearest example on the board right now. A working one runs $449. The cheapest for-parts listing is $195, described as "NO POST - For Parts or Repair," which is the failure mode with the worst recovery odds. You're paying 43% of working price for something that probably has a bent-pin socket injury.

Compare that to the Core i9-9900K, where broken units sit at $50 against $179.99 working. Still a gamble, but 28% is a price that reflects the risk. 43% isn't.

Where the discount is real

Boards and GPUs are the two categories where broken pricing makes sense, because they have failure modes a competent person can actually fix. A blown VRM phase, a dead fan header, a bad capacitor, a cracked HDMI port. None of those are beginner work, but all of them are work.

ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WIFI

The ASUS ASUS ROG Strix B850-A Gaming WIFI was released in 2025. It currently tracks at $130 used, 55% below buying new at $290. Broken/parts units track around $55, leaving roughly $75 of gross spread for a repair flip.

That B850-A is $54.99 broken against $129.99 working. And the RX 6700 XT below sits at $159.99 for parts against $324.99 working, almost exactly the 50% category median.

The Gigabyte Gigabyte RX 6700 XT was released in 2021. It currently tracks at $325 used. Broken/parts units track around $160, leaving roughly $165 of gross spread for a repair flip.

The words in the listing that actually matter

Read the title before the price. These are the ones that change what you're buying:

  • "No POST" or "no display" on a board or card means it powers but doesn't initialize. Sometimes a BIOS chip, sometimes the whole thing.
  • Does it say untested, or does it say defective? Untested often means an estate or clearance seller who genuinely doesn't know. Defective means someone tested it and it failed.
  • "PCB only," "no core," "board only," "no VRAM." You're buying a donor, not a card. I threw five of these out of the sample above because including them would have made the GPU median look far better than it is.
  • As-is with no described symptom is the weakest listing of all. A seller who can describe the fault has usually tried to fix it.

What I'd do

Buy broken boards and graphics cards, at half of working price or better, and only in a category where you can name the fault before you bid. Skip broken CPUs entirely unless they're under a third of working price, because the failure modes don't reward you. And treat any broken accessory priced near a working one as what it is, which is a collector paying for scarcity, not a flip.

Check the working price first, every time. The number that matters isn't what the broken one costs. It's the gap.
