AMD's Ryzen 9 7950X and Intel's Core i9-14900K spent over a year as their respective companies' top mainstream desktop chip. Both have since been replaced at retail by newer flagships, which means both are now firmly used-market territory: exactly where ChipFlip's data is most useful.

What independent reviewers found
Power draw. This is the clearest, most consistent finding across reviewers. GamersNexus's testing measured the 7950X pulling 251W in an all-core workload, well below Intel's chip in the same test. XDA Developers puts real numbers on the gap too: the 14900K can hit up to 350 watts under sustained load, against roughly 200 watts for the 7950X. If your case airflow or PSU headroom is tight, that difference is the whole ballgame.
Productivity: reviewers don't fully agree, and that's worth knowing. In GamersNexus's Blender render test, the 7950X finished faster than the 14900K, which needed 7.9 minutes for the same job. But XDA's broader productivity suite puts the Intel chip ahead overall. Neither source is wrong. It depends heavily on whether your workload leans toward the kind of heavily-threaded rendering Blender represents, or something closer to XDA's mixed suite. If you do a specific kind of work (video encoding, compiling, CAD), look for a benchmark of that specific task before trusting either chip's "overall" productivity crown.
Gaming. XDA found the two trade blows below 120 FPS, with the 14900K pulling ahead at higher refresh rates and in competitive titles where single-core speed and cache matter more.
The long-term call. XDA's own framing is the clearest verdict here: the 7950X is "the better choice in the long term," largely because AM5 has a longer runway of future CPU upgrades ahead of it than Intel's now-retired LGA1700 socket. GamersNexus reaches a similar conclusion from a different angle, rating the 7950X as generally the better value for production workloads specifically.
What this actually means for buying used
Specs and benchmarks are the same regardless of who's selling the chip. What changes is the price you can actually get it for, and that's where the two diverge more than the reviews above suggest.
Right now, the 7950X is tracking at a deeper discount off its original retail price than the 14900K is. That's not automatically a reason to prefer one over the other. A bigger used-market discount can mean genuine bargain, or it can mean the market's pricing in more platform risk (a socket nearing true end-of-life, in AM5's case not really, but worth checking before you buy). A smaller discount on the 14900K reflects sustained demand for a chip that's still genuinely competitive in gaming benchmarks.
If you're buying to actually use for years, the AM5 upgrade path reviewers keep pointing to is a real, concrete reason to lean AMD. If you're flipping, the wider spread on the 7950X is the more interesting number: more room between what you can source it for and what it resells at, assuming demand holds.
Bottom line
Neither chip is a bad buy used. The 14900K still wins outright in gaming and in some productivity workloads; the 7950X runs cooler, draws less power, and sits on a platform with more room to grow. Reviewers are split on "which is better" for good reason: it depends on what you're actually going to do with it. Check the live numbers above before deciding, since used pricing moves independently of the benchmarks.
